Variations on the LBRP

Posted by: Ipse   in Instructional, Library

It seems that there is a much newer current of witchcraft burdgeoning onto the scene that mixes both traditional “lower” or “practical” magick with the “higher” or “ceremonial” magick.  Now, all arguments aside about this (a good reference if you want to know more is Chris Penczak’s “Temple of High Witchcraft”), one of the more commonly weaved in pieces of Ceremonial Magick is the LBRP or Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram.

It would seem that everyone from Amber K. to Frater U:.D:. to Phil Hine would have an opinion on, a variant of and a rather pointed view of the ritual.  However, there are common themes to all of these.

  1. The calling (rather banishing in this case) of the cardinal points, starting east.
  2. The direction of the drawing of each elemental pentagram.
  3. The agreement of the archangels, elements and cardinal points.
    • East: Air, Raphael (Raf Aye El)
    • South: Fire, Michael  (Mee Kay El)
    • West: Water, Gabriel (Gae Bree El)
    • North: Earth, Uriel (Ur Aye El)

Now there is much ado that goes on about the banishment vs. invocation of each element, direction or archangel, but the basics are the same.

What are some of the community’s experiences with the LBRP (or LIRP) and the use of it in ritual? Success? Failure? Unnecessary? Absolutely required?

Let’s hear from you!

Very nice post from one of our newer members.

To address your question: I feel that while doing the LBRP is not necessary per se, some sort of “Framing” ritual is. Essentially my experience and training has been such that one should frame a ritual in an opening and a closing for best results, even if this is only a short preliminary invocation and license to depart.

Thanks for the input! I have been rearranging my ritual order and procession and this is the kind of feedback I needed.

Blessed Be
